Liverpool have been working tirelessly this season and the efforts of the midfield are one of many reasons why Arne Slot's maiden campaign on Merseyside has been such a success.

If a team doesn't have the energy to compete on the ball for 90 minutes, then you are always facing an uphill battle, which is why the club acted so quickly in the summer of 2023 to bring in four new recruits - Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.

While last season took a little too much out of the players in the end, it has been clear this season that Slot has the bunch in a much better space as Liverpool's engine room has been firing on all cylinders in recent weeks, while other teams have begun to fatigue.

However, while the four most recent transfers often take the headlines regarding the Reds' midfield, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott were already at the club before they joined and Jones in particular is on track for his best season.

Jones - Liverpool's underrated home-grown gem

Curtis Jones is one of the few Scouse players in Liverpool's team, but he often gets forgotten about.

While he's not known for being particularly defensive or attacking, he often focusses on putting in the hard yards and pressing the opposition like there is no tomorrow.

But this season he has been able to dovetail between covering Mac Allister and Szoboszlai when called upon and he has really shone when given the opportunity.

According to WhoScored.com, Jones has the best final third pass success rate (90.7%) of any midfielder in the Premier League this season, with a minimum of 200 passes.

That has led to him getting three goals and three assists in his 12 starts.

In addition, his former assistant coach Pepijn Lijnders spoke very highly of him in Amazon's new Liverpool documentary 'Doubters to Believers - Liverpool FC: Klopp's Era'.

The Dutchman was pictured considering his perfect ideal for the England national team, which included Jones alongside Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.

“Most complete midfield. Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, and Curtis Jones," Lijnders said.

High praise for the 24-year-old, who only made his senior debut for England in November, capping off his first match with a goal against Greece.

Nonetheless, despite having just two appearances to his name, it is clear that Jones has all the capabilities to be an asset for his country moving forward and potentially get to the same level as Bellingham and Rice.

It will be fascinating to see whether new boss Thomas Tuchel picks in his first squad later this month.

But focusing back on the team, it is important that Liverpool's midfield successes are credited fairly and Jones has most certainly been a key figure for the Reds this season. Without the tenacity of the players, the Reds may well have struggled this season, despite Mohamed Salah's best efforts.
