Liverpool are flying this season and the squad is mostly the same as last season.

After Jurgen Klopp left, feeling he didn't have the energy required to succeed as Liverpool's manager anymore, the club brought in Arne Slot, who has got the players performing at an even higher level than we've come to expect in recent years.

In addition, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) restructured the executive hierarchy at the club, bringing in Richard Hughes as the club's Sporting Director and returning Michael Edwards to the club as the Director of Football.

And while Slot is yet to bring in a player to suit his slightly adjusted, the club is open to 'opportunistic' moves and one such transfer might be on the cards that has been several years in the making.

Christopher Nkunku: A temporary fix to Liverpool's problems

While the team's attacking threat is far from problematic this season, having scored 83 goals this season already, issues are brewing that could hurt the team in the long term.

Luis Diaz, for example, has only got three Premier League goals since September, a clear representation that he is struggling this season and when Liverpool find themselves in an off game, they need someone to step up and rescue the team.

Two weeks ago, against Nottingham Forest, it was Diogo Jota who rescued a point for the team at the City ground, by netting a header just seconds after coming off the bench. The Portuguese international had a point to prove, although his season has been heavily impacted by injuries which have limited his involvement on the pitch.

And last week, against Brentford, it was Darwin Nunez who was the team's saviour, scoring twice in injury time to secure a massive three points against a tricky opponent. It was the first time in this campaign that Nunez was able to make a real difference to the team - his season has been plagued with performances that haven't been at the required level.

As such, if Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo begin to slow down their efforts in front of goal, then the team will soon find itself in an untenable position, squandering the opportunities it has created for itself so far this season.

In his assessment of events this week, The Times' Paul Joyce wrote: "Núñez was very much a Klopp signing (Liverpool’s recruitment think-tank preferred Christopher Nkunku, then of RB Leipzig, who has spent this season injured at Chelsea) and the manager spoke about how it is his responsibility to provide the player with the confidence to perform."

Surely the club wouldn't be considering a risky and incredibly bold loan move for Christopher Nkunku now that he is being linked with a move away from Chelsea as the Blues consider bringing in Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho?

Having bought so many players over the years, it was always likely that Chelsea would have surplus players, and Nkunku finds himself in a difficult spot.

He can play as a centre forward, although he is constantly battling with Nicholas Jackson for minutes and there is no chance he can deter Enzo Maresca from playing Cole Palmer in his favoured position in attacking midfield.

But if a loan move becomes a legitimate possibility - not a permanent move because Liverpool will need to consider the long-term futures of their attackers come the end of the season - then who says no?

Nkunku would most likely receive more game time than he currently is at Chelsea, and the Reds' hierarchy would finally get to see the player who was originally preferred over Nunez, supposedly because the stats implied that he would be a better fit for the club.

Is it likely? No. But it is far from being outside the realms of possibilities and given the club's commitment to 'opportunistic' transfers, it could be a move that further enhances Liverpool's chances of winning a 20th league title.
