Liverpool have made contact over Colombian defender Kevin Mantilla. The Tallares club president has confirmed it.

Tallares club president Andres Fassi has confirmed contact from Liverpool for Kevin Mantilla. The 20-year-old centre-back only moved to the Argentinian team in the summer but already has clubs asking about him.

Liverpool and Brighton are the two named clubs. Each wanted to know more about Mantilla, presumably as they increased their scouting of the player.

“It’s true, they have been following him for four months now. And they asked us for information about his physical records,” Fassi told La Voz.

That is pretty much all the information to go on right now, other than reports of previous Liverpool interest in Mantilla. TuttoMercatoWeb claimed around a year ago that the Reds were one of several sides chasing the Colombian.

None of the named European clubs did sign him, however, and Mantilla moved to Tallares in Argentina. From the sounds of it, that was a shrewd signing from the club - the interest seemingly hasn't gone away.

Now he's playing in a bigger league, for a bigger club and will almost certainly move for a profit if he continues to impress. Liverpool have kept up their scouting since he moved and that's a fine sign that they see real potential in Mantilla.

But, of course, Liverpool will have eyes on an incredible number of talents across the world. That's just the nature of how big European clubs operate. Everyone wants to be the first to the next big thing - and perhaps Mantilla fits the bill there.

Time will tell. What's clear, though, is that if the 20-year-old does indeed improve and impress, Liverpool will be at the front of the queue to sign him. They've put the work in thus far - let's see if it pays off down the line.
