Liverpool find themselves on the brink of winning the Premier League this season, but a number of issues have sprung up that will need to be addressed imminently. Arne Slot may have done well to cover them up this time, but they will continue to hinder the squad if they are ignored any longer.

During last summer's extraordinarily quiet summer, the club made an attempt to carefully anticipate a future issue, and solve it before become a big deal. That decision was to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili as a potential Alisson replacement, before the Brazilian needs replacing.

As a result, Caoimhin Kelleher has felt increasingly isolated, knowing that the only way that he will get regular minutes on the pitch is to leave Liverpool and find a permanent move elsewhere.

Only now, there is a new update to the saga which is set to throw everything out of whack.

Mamardashvili to remain at Valencia while Alisson to stays at Liverpool

According to Cadena SER, via Estadio Deportivo, Giorgi Mamardashvili is considering his options ahead of this summer, when he is expected to finally meet up with his new Liverpool colleagues at Merseyside.

The agreement between Valencia and the Reds was that Liverpool would buy him on a six-year deal, although he would spend the 2024/25 season at the Spanish club.

However the report claims that because Alisson is unlikely to move on from Liverpool this season, the Georgian is looking at the idea of spending the 2025/26 season at Valencia, on the basis that he would become the first-choice goalkeeper when he eventually joins the Reds.

If this were to come to fruition and Liverpool were to be missing their £30m goalkeeper for another season, then a whole host of problems would ensue, creating a greater headache for the Reds' recruitment team.

Alisson is 32 years old and his current deal is not set to expire until 2027, and while Mamardashvili might prove to be an ideal replacement for him, Liverpool could easily have jumped the gun by making the deal.

It was only last month when the Brazilian delivered his best shirt in a Liverpool shirt, stopping Paris Saint Germain from scoring at home in the Champions League, a performance that helped the Reds take a 1-0 lead in the second leg.

As such, it is hardly beyond the realms of possibility that he might be able to perform to a high level for many years to come, which would certainly disrupt Mamardashvili's plans of taking on the No. 1 role.

Kelleher is in search of becoming a No. 1 himself, and after years of service for the club, it is hardly fair to force him to be Liverpool's No. 2. The Irishman is out of contract in 2026 and he will not willingly extend his deal to spend even more time on the bench.

So it makes sense for Mamardashvili to join the Reds formally and compete with Alisson for the main role. That way whoever delivers the best performances will taken on the responsibility by merit.

But if the Georgian is looking at other options, then we could be faced with two distinct possibilities; one, that Alisson is going to stay, at least for this summer and potentially beyond; and two, that Liverpool will need to convince Kelleher to not move in this window, or else we'll have to find a new No. 2.

Amongst all the uncertainty, what is clear is that the Reds have a lot on their plate at the moment, and while it might have been reasonable to expect some changes this summer, we might have more to do than we initially imagined. Strap in for the ride, because it is going to be well and truly wild.
