Cody Gakpo SNUBS Liverpool teammates

Cody Gakpo has been enjoying his time under new head coach Arne Slot at Liverpool this season.

He has made an appearance in every game so far in some capacity, starting five of Liverpool’s twelve matches on the left wing. He has also bagged two goals and two assists so far.

These have vital been contributions to Liverpool’s overall excellent start to the season that sees them currently top of the Premier League and second in the Champions League table, one of just two sides who have a 100% record in the European competition alongside Aston Villa.

And, as it always is, this is down to the performances of the team. Trent Alexander-Arnold is in great form, both Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are rocks in defence, Ryan Gravenberch is arguably the best defensive midfielder in the world this season, and Mo Salah is doing Mo Salah things with 14 goal involvements already.

This seemingly hasn’t revolutionised Gakpo’s world though. When asked who he thinks the best player in the world is for a game of tic-tac-toe on GOAL’s Front Three YouTube channel, Gakpo said:

“[Kylian] Mbappe or Vinicius [Junior]. But actually when [Lionel] Messi’s still playing… he is something else.”

It’s an understandable answer. It’s an acceptable answer. Kylian Mbappe is perhaps the foremost name in world football these days and Vinicius Junior is on track to win this year’s Ballon D’Or.

Lionel Messi goes without saying. But Gakpo plays alongside some of the best players in their positions in the world right now and clearly didn’t think how this would go down in the dressing room. We would love to see his teammates reactions to the video - we’re sure they won’t let him off lightly.

Gakpo does redeem himself though, saying that Van Dijk is 'one of the best' centre-backs of modern times. This is an indisputable claim with Van Dijk arguably being the best central defender in the world since he joined Liverpool back in 2018.

He also cuts a bemused figure when show host Yarns says that Real Madrid’s Antonio Rudiger is a better centre-back, but diplomatically replies "If you think".

We’re sure Gakpo wasn’t going to offend anyone. It’s a difficult scenario when asked as a footballer yourself to comment publicly on your peers. But if Mo Salah did have some words for him we wouldn’t be too surprised.
