It looks like Trent Alexander-Arnold has a choice between Liverpool and Real Madrid at present. With an expiring contract in summer 2025, Trent is being chased by the 15-time European champions to sign on a high-profile free transfer.

A starting point for a renewal at Anfield would be to match the offer that Madrid are reported to have put on the table. We are led to believe it would include a sizeable signing-on fee - as much as a transfer fee itself - as well as a weekly salary of £400,000.

Is Trent worth that? On current form, no.

There has never been any question over his attacking output, delivering assists galore - and his fair share of goals - throughout his time in the first team.

But Arne Slot appears to have lessened Liverpool’s dependence on the full-backs from a creative perspective and it’s no surprise to see Andy Robertson under scrutiny at the same time.

Trent on toast

And if Trent isn’t playmaking then he has to be a legitimate right-back. That means defending, in the main, and there have been a couple of occasions recently where those standards haven’t been met.

Against Manchester City a couple of weeks ago, Trent was dribbled past a Premier League record of 12 times. Jeremy Doku had him on toast.

And in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, it appeared that Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia were taking turns to run at the England international.

"Most of the chances PSG had came from the flanks and Dembele, in particular, had joy when taking on the Englishman," said the Express.

SofaScore meanwhile ranked Trent second-lowest of all Liverpool's starters on 6.5. Only Mohamed Salah was lower on the night.

He couldn’t muster an answer, losing the majority of his duels and being dribbled past time and again.

It’s a long-standing quibble against Trent. Although he claimed earlier this season that he’d been learning at the feet of Slot, there hasn’t really been much of a pick-up.

£400,000 per week might be sufficient pay for the best right-back in the world but Trent has got to prove he’s the best right-back in Liverpool first.

He’s got Conor Bradley standing behind him waiting for a shot and if the Northern Irishman can prove his fitness then he’s got every chance of replacing the 26-year-old in the short term.
