The makeshift team saw quite a few of the Reds' fringe players make an appearance, including the likes of Wataru Endo and Tyler Morton.

But despite the makeshift XI there were plenty of positives to take from the game with a few impressive individual performances and and some nice passages of play on the night, encapsulating what Slot's football is all about.

In the end it turned out to be a comfortable victory for the Reds. Here are four things Anfield Watch spotted from the game that you might have missed.

Exciting academy talent on the bench

With this being a makeshift squad, there was a notable new face on the bench for Liverpool.

18-year-old Ranel Young was selected in the first team matchday squad for the first time after his impressive performances this season.

Young is traditionally a winger, but he's been playing as a forward for the Reds' U21 and U19 sides this season, where he has caught the eye scoring goals against Arsenal's U21 side in a 3-0 victory and an important opener in Liverpool's win over Bologna in the UEFA Youth League.

Making the bench for the first time will have been a huge moment for him. He's one to keep an eye on as one of many talented players in the club's academy.

Polish stopper in the squad

Another youngster who was given the call-up was Liverpool's talented 17-year-old Polish goalkeeper Kornel Misciur.

The impressive goalkeeper has been catching the eye with his performances in the club's academy and travelled with the first team squad for tonight's game as a third goalkeeper.

Harvey Davies has been doing that for the Reds recently but this time around Misciur got the call showing just how highly rated he is.

In the end, he didn't make the matchday squad, but it will have been a brilliant experience for him nonetheless.

On the night Liverpool's third goalkeeper Jaros caught the eye making an incredible save, Misciur will have been encouraged by what he has seen.

The youngster is very highly rated and could follow in Jaros' footsteps in years to come.

Cody Gakpo - Liverpool's League Cup specialist

The Dutchman has a brilliant record in the League Cup for Liverpool and he has been the key for the Reds in the competition this season as well.

With his brace on the night, Gakpo now has four goals in just two games in the competition so far in this campaign.

In total he has scored eight goals in the League Cup in eight matches.

Once Takumi Minamino's crown, it seems like the Dutchman is taking over as Mr League Cup at Anfield.

Long may it continue.

Makeshift Dominik Szoboszlai role

As predicted before the match, despite many expecting the Hungarian to play on the wing, Szoboszlai was surprisingly called upon to play in the false nine role for Liverpool.

This was a new position for the Reds' no.8 but he didn't look out of place, pressing from the front and sending us down the nostalgia lane with the way he resembled Roberto Firmino in his prime.

Szoboszlai covered a lot of ground and pressed right up against Brighton's defence and even goalkeeper. He showed a lot of improvement with his passing as well, misplacing just one pass in the entire game.

Yes, he should have done better with the chance Gakpo put in front of him on a plate in the second half but his off the ball work definitely showed promise.

Given Liverpool's problems in that no.9 position, Szoboszlai demonstrated to Slot he could be a contender for the role as well.
