Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp takes cheeky dig at Chelsea rebuild with 'endless money' claim

Jurgen Klopp says one of the main reasons behind his Liverpool contract extension was to methodically rebuild the squad as the Reds find themselves at a crossroads. 

In an interview for BT Sport podcast Mike Calvin’s Football People, as transcribed by the Independent, the Liverpool boss called for patience and admitted that he will not be able to oversee a squad rebuild 'overnight.'

"I’m not saying it’s the biggest challenge, but it’s a challenge, and it was one of the main reasons why I signed a new contract because I knew it’s necessary.

“It will not go overnight, and imagine the situation now with another coach in the chair. I would be somewhere on holiday and everybody would shout my name ‘with him it would not have happened!’ I’m obviously not a miracle worker. That’s why it’s good how it is, because all the problems you have in a transition time period, we have an awful lot of injuries, and that makes life really complicated. I have no problem with that because I see obviously… I know the majority of the outside world is just interested in the short term but we have to be long-term focused as well, and that’s what we are."

Klopp also touched upon Chelsea's rebuild under Graham Potter as they continue to splash the cash in the transfer market to seemingly overhaul their squad.

"There are obviously plenty of different ways you can do it, but it’s all based on the situation you are in, especially with the things happening around, Chelsea with the new ownership obviously, nobody knows exactly how they do it, how they can spend this much money. Other teams, nobody likes me talking about that... but transition needs time if you don’t have endless money, otherwise you can change overnight pretty much, bringing in 10 players."

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Unlike Chelsea under Todd Boehly, Liverpool do not have a bottomless pit of money available every summer, with FSG continuing to stick to the self-sustaining model that has worked so well for them since the German arrived at Anfield in 2015. The Reds will have money to spend this summer, but unlike Chelsea, Klopp will have to work under a strict budget to make Liverpool a force to be reckoned with once again.

That said, there's been a lot of talk of new owners coming, while it has also been reported that FSG are open to a partial sale to fund further investments. Liverpool don't really need a squad revamp, but it's important they make a handful of shrewd additions in the transfer market to add fresh blood to an aging squad if they are to compete on all fronts next season.
