Rather than a tweak to the system, Shankly opted to tweak his side’s attire.

When Liverpool were established back in 1892, they initially represented a kit not too dissimilar to modern-day Blackburn Rovers. The blue and white strip was the club's colourway for four years, before being replaced by the red and white associated with the pre-Shankly era of Liverpool.
Shankly’s decision to change to a full red kit in 1964 was because he believed it would make them more intimidating on the pitch as they embarked on their maiden European campaign.
Following his side’s 3-0 win over the Belgian outfit at Anfield. Shankly was certainly pleased with his decision.
"The introduction of the all-red strip had a huge psychological effect. The players looked like giants. And we played like giants,” the Scotsman said.
A decision that became one of the most powerful in the club’s history. It’ll never be determined whether it had a genuine psychological on opponents but it was an idea that was inevitably the future.
