If there’s been another team in the world who could have matched Liverpool game-for-game this season, it’s Barcelona.

The Catalan side sit top of La Liga on goal difference (but with a game in hand) over Real Madrid after beating their city-mates Atletico this past weekend, who themselves only sit four points behind.

They have also cruised through to the Champions League quarter finals and have a real shot at lifting the trophy for the first time since 2015.

They have done so with a complete team but, similarly to Liverpool, on the backs of their two dynamic wingers - Raphinha and Lamine Yamal.

Raphinha has had a campaign so spectacular that he is rivalling Mo Salah for Ballon d’Or talk at this very moment. The former Leeds United man has a staggering 47 goal involvements in 42 games in all competitions so far this season. This includes a hattrick against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, three goals in their recent Round of 16 tie against Benfica, and three goals and two assists in their games against Real Madrid this season.

Yamal, meanwhile, is the premium young talent in the world right now. He breakout in Spain’s Euro 2024 winning side has continued into this season and the 17-year old has 30 goal involvements in 38 appearances this season.

The standard of their performances has led to every club in the world - Liverpool involved - rumoured to be trying to sign them. But these performances have also left a once-revered wonderkid sitting on the sidelines.

Liverpool may try and sign Ansu Fati

Ansu Fati’s story is a confusing one. He burst onto the scene as a 17-year old for Barcelona in 2019/20, scoring seven goals for the first team. Injuries have plagued him since then, but he managed to contribute significantly to their title win in 2022/23.

After this, however, was the beginning of the end. An ill-fated loan move to Brighton last season saw him make 27 appearances for the Seagulls but only bag five goal involvements.

And more injuries have meant he has only logged 187 minutes for Barcelona this season. It’s a warning to sides who are pushing their young players too far too early.

And now transfer guru Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Barcelona are still trying to sell Fati who, at just 22 years old, still could be an incredibly talented player.

“Barcelona’s plan with Ansu Fati remains the same as January, trying to find a new club in order to sell him. Ansu rejected more than 4 approaches in January and he’ll have the final decision, but Barca remain open to letting him go.” reads Romano’s post on X.

In that case, Liverpool could make an eye-catching move for the winger. He represents everything the club like in new players - young, dynamic and available at a cut-price.

If they believe they could keep him fit, rotating him in and out of the squad as a quality depth player until he gets fully back up to the speed of the game, then it could represent a really wily investment.
