Liverpool are rivalling Aston Villa for the signature of Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup.

That is according to reports in Italy from Tuttomercato. Frendrup had his first full season in Serie A in the last campaign after joining Genoa in January 2022 and staying put when they got relegated.

The 23-year-old joined from Danish side Brondby after winning the Danish Cup as well as the Superliga during his time there.

For Genoa, he has been a key player in the middle of the park as he featured 39 times in all competitions last season.

Now his form has been noted by some top teams in England and Arne Slot is supposedly one manager who wants him.

GENOA DEEM FRENDRUP UNTRANSFERABLE

The report from Italy states that Liverpool and Aston Villa have both submitted a bid in recent weeks after asking for information about the midfielder.

Both sides have supposedly offered a fee worth €25 million but the Italian side have rejected the offers. For Genoa losing Frendrup is too big of a blow so they have deemed him untransferable.

They are currently looking at signing Jens Cajuste from Napoli but only to partner Frendrup rather than replace him.

Aston Villa have had a busy transfer window so far signing 11 players compared to Liverpool’s zero.

It has been reported several times that The Reds are in for a midfielder and that may become more pressing if Wataru Endo leaves.

A bid for his services from Marseille was rejected but it appears that there is a chance he could depart. If that does happen Liverpool will certainly need a replacement so Frendrup could be an option.

Other alternatives for the midfield position include Tyler Morton, Stefan Bajcetic and Curtis Jones. Trey Nyoni, meanwhile, impressed in the friendly win against Real Betis on Friday night.

Genoa finished in 11th place last season which emphasises that they had a respectable campaign but the lure of Champions League football could be enough to tempt Frendrup.
