Arne Slot has proved many wrong with his incredible start to life as Liverpool’s head coach.

The Dutchman has had a record-breaking start to the season and has led the Reds to top of the Premier League, whilst they also maintain a perfect record in Europe.

No one was expecting Slot to be this good this quickly, but he already has Liverpool looking ready to compete on all fronts.

Slot’s side have faced some tough challenges so far this campaign, but they have usually prevailed.

Liverpool can already boast a 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, a 2-1 victory over Chelsea, a 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates and perhaps most impressively a 4-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, who only lost one game in all competitions last season.

Now it appears that Slot may even have proven himself to his biggest critic.

Nicol: Slot’s biggest critic

Steve Nicol, who played 468 times for Liverpool and won four league titles, has been one of Slot’s biggest critics since he arrived in Merseyside.

Following the Reds’ pre-season US tour, Nicol shared that he expected the start of the season to be full of ‘teething problems’ for the new head coach, but any teething problems Slot has faced don’t seem to have affected Liverpool’s form too much.

After Slot’s only loss since taking the job, a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, Nicol was once again critical of Slot and claimed that the Reds lost the ‘psychological battle’ against Forest.

Even after Liverpool beat Chelsea at Anfield, one of their toughest games yet, Nicol was highly critical of the Reds’ performance and believed they were lucky to come away with a win against the Blues.

Nicol finally full of praise for Slot

It took a 4-0 win over the reigning German champions for Nicol to finally change his tune on Arne Slot’s Liverpool.

“I thought for the majority of the game Liverpool were absolutely in control.” Nicol said speaking to ESPN after the match. “I never at any stage was in any fear that Liverpool weren’t going to win this game, there’s no question”

For a 90-minute period this is Liverpool’s best of the season by far. By far. Total control.

Steve Nicol

It appears that Slot has finally been able to convince his harshest critic, and this is more proof that the Dutchman is improving week by week in Liverpool.

It is still early in the season, with just over a quarter of the league games having been played, but the Reds certainly look ready to put on a good challenge for the title.

Liverpool supporters will be hoping for more ‘total control’ as the Reds continue a very difficult run of fixtures but, if Slot can keep the momentum going, there may well be a trophy parade in Liverpool come the end of the season.
