Liverpool must give Arne Slot the one player he NEEDS

So far, Arne Slot has done a remarkable job with the team he inherited from Jurgen Klopp.

And while the squad is undoubtedly littered with talent, he is managing to get more out of the players than his predecessor did.

The focus on development, however, might in part be due to the lack of incoming players coming into the team. Federico Chiesa is set to be the only new player on Merseyside across both the summer and winter transfer windows.

FSG have taken a frugal stance so far, with the argument being that moves will only be made for players who can help improve the team. But while this team is imposing, it is clear that there are at least a few positions that should be recruited, and the ownership has just decided to sit back and wait for the time being.

Yet if Arne Slot were to be given the free licence to put his blueprint on this Liverpool side, there might be a few improvements the Dutchman would make that fans would not automatically recognise as a problem. The club's hierarchy, however, has already been scouting possible incomings.

Slot is missing his archetypal winger

Liverpool have a vast array of attacking talent in their squad. From Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz at left wing, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota as central strikers and Mohamed Salah and Federico Chiesa at the right-wing.

But let's break it down a second. In Jota and Nunez, the club has two strikers who have very different footballing personalities. Nunez likes to drive in from the left, while occasionally sitting forward as a target man, although his finishing is to be desired.

Meanwhile, Jota is known for his remarkable heading ability, despite being a relatively short striker, and despite having a mixed season so far - which has been hindered by injury - he is usually the more clinical asset.

The club may choose to move one or both of them on in the summer as a result of their underperforming efforts in the position, but for the time being, alongside Jayden Danns coming up through the academy, Liverpool have a few options to work with.

At right-wing, we are yet to really see what Federico Chiesa is capable of, having been sidelined with a variety of different fitness and injury concerns, but when he has played, he has been able to make a difference.

Salah in contrast has been phenomenal this season, producing some of the best attacking returns of his entire career, at the age of 32. which is remarkable. But while he can still run at defenders and get past them on occasion, he has had to get a little bit more creative in order to continue to influence games - setting up more goals than usual.

Amidst his looming contract situation and the likelihood that even if he were to extend his deal it would only be for a couple more seasons, Slot will need to replace him in some way - either through bringing in the next big superstar or using multiple players in the position to make up for his absence.

Meanwhile, at left wing, Diaz and Gakpo have been magnificent. In certain games, the Colombian has been used as a centre-forward to expand his game, meanwhile, Gakpo has been able to make the wide position his own for the first time at Liverpool.

But the reality is that neither are exactly duel winners in the attacking areas. The energy and hunger to win the ball back in tight spaces at the top end of the pitch just isn't there. At Feyenoord, Slot had players with that dynamic in Yankuba Minteh and Igor Paixao.

As such, while the club is in need of defensive recruits such as a left-back, a centre-back and potentially a right-back, alongside a defensive midfielder, Slot may want to add an extra layer of control to Liverpool's attack.

Jamie Gittens the perfect solution?

Liverpool's interest in Borussia Dortmund's Gittens is apparently genuine and well-renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has recently confirmed that the club is closely monitoring him.

The Englishman is only 20 years old and having failed to break through after developing in Manchester City's academy, he jumped at the opportunity to showcase his skills in Germany.

The young sensation is known for his one-on-one take-on success and carrying the ball up the pitch at lightning speed, before dribbling past defenders at will.

He has 11 goals and four assists across all competitions so far this season and he could be the perfect piece to complete the complex project Slot is overseeing at Liverpool.

The club previously looked at bringing in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before he moved to Paris Saint Germain - a player with a similar attacking profile to Gittens, with just an added level of development and maturity for playing the game an extra couple of years.

As such, despite Slot's team scoring 77 goals in 32 games this season, it is not out of the picture that further additions could be made to the attack when the Dutchman is given a budget to use to help build a squad in his image.
