A young Liverpool star is leading the goalscoring charts - and knocking on the door to get a chance in the first-team squad.

Arne Slot hasn't given a lot of opportunities to young players so far. However, as the season progresses and the need for rotation and the possibility of injuries increases there will be more opportunities along the way for the club's young stars.

And one in particular, who is still very young, could very much be involved when that time comes if he continues his excellent run of form this season.

Reds academy starlet Josh Sonni-Lambie is currently the academy’s top scorer, with four goals across all competitions, outscoring much-vaunted names such as Rio Ngumoha and impressing thanks to his work both with and without the ball.

Who is Josh Sonni-Lambie?

Sonni-Lambie has broken into the U-18 set-up very quickly, and considering he is still 16 he should be applauded for that alone.

Indeed, U-18s manager Marc Bridge-Wilkinson spoke to the official club website to reflect on the recent 2-2 draw with Leeds United in which Sonni-Lambie netted a ‘sensational’ leveller late in proceedings.

Bridge-Wilkinson said of the young striker: “It was a lovely finish, a really nice turn in the box under a lot of pressure and a delicate and very precise finish. He’s got that in him, he can do that and we know that. What we need Josh to do is score the more simple goals inside the box and closer to goal. But we know what he can do.”

We’ve seen in recent seasons several exciting forwards make the leap to the first-team squad such as Lewis Koumas and Jayden Danns, so could Sonni-Lambie be the next in line?

Obviously, much has been written about the strength in depth of Liverpool’s forward line, but if injury strikes as it sadly so often has in recent seasons then it’s plain to see Sonni-Lambie is head of the queue when it comes to getting a chance in the first team.

Right now he is knocking on that first-team door and it would not be a surprise if he was called up to first-team training this week while club's main stars are away on international duty.
