On the pitch Liverpool are rocking, leading the way in the Premier League and the Champions League.

But recent results suggest the team are in a bit of a rough patch and alongside an abundance of off-the-pitch issues, fans are starting to doubt the players who aren't quite performing at the level we expect.

Alisson is far from his best in goal, but his quality is already well-established. Andy Robertson, however, seems to be in more of a permanent rut and there is a clear problem brewing with Jarell Quansah as well.

The young centre-back has been given plenty of opportunities this season having been sidelined early on in the campaign because of the brilliance of Ibrahima Konate alongside Virgil van Dijk. The French defender was ruled out with an injury throughout December and while Joe Gomez has taken on much of the workload, Quansah has failed to impress.

Is the writing on the wall for Quansah?

According to a new report from The Mirror, questions are starting to be asked of the 21-year-old who has failed to hit the ground running when finally given his chance in the team.

Their report reads: "Arne Slot is not convinced by Jarell Quansah and the England defender has gone backwards after his eye-catching breakthrough campaign last season.

"Joe Gomez is as versatile as a Swiss army knife, but he will only ever be a reliable deputy rather than an automatic starter."

As such, Liverpool - who already need a new centre-back having failed to replace Joel Matip - might well look to cut their losses with Quansah.

While it may sound brutal, the Englishman is not delivering the standard of performances that he did last season and although he is still incredibly young, and an obvious talent, his step 'backwards' may hurt Liverpool going forward for the rest of the campaign if he cannot return to his previous levels.

Liverpool's homegrown issues

Regular game time will undoubtedly make a difference to his consistency and his confidence and feeding off scraps will have made it difficult for him to keep his performance levels high, but when you're out of the team, you've got to show you're ready to be called on at any time.

Arne Slot clearly doesn't trust him as much as he does other players, but as he is still developing his game, it seems reasonable that the approach is a cautious one.

However, having extended his contract at the club in October 2024, the question ought to be asked as to whether Liverpool made a mistake in securing Quansah's services for the long term. His efforts last season were mightily impressive, but he seems to have regressed this season - at least to an extent.

If things were to get to a point where the Reds were considering letting him go, then considerations would also have to be made about meeting the homegrown players quota that the Premier League has in place - eight players, exactly the number Liverpool have right now.

Of course, things could all blow over and Quansah might just be having one of those seasons where he isn't at his best. But when the team is on course for a title challenge and he is failing to succeed in the buoyant team atmosphere, it is clear that concerns about his performances are valid to an extent and things will need to change.
