Liverpool are reportedly keeping an eye on a 27-year-old Aston Villa midfielder
Liverpool could make a move for Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn, according to Mirror Football, as cited by Anfield Edition's Twitter account.
It has been reported that the Reds have been keeping an eye on the 27-year-old. However, apparently Aston Villa are set to offer McGinn a new deal to fend off any interest from rival clubs.
The Scotland international's current deal expires in June 2025.
Anfield Watch Verdict
We would not be against Liverpool making a move for the midfielder. McGinn has been having a decent season for Aston Villa.
The midfielder has scored three goals and registered two assists in 20 Premier League appearances.
James Pearce has made it clear in the past that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is a fan of McGinn.
“Manager Jurgen Klopp wanted to know whether John McGinn ever stopped running on a match day,” the journalist wrote for The Athletic, as quoted by The Empire of the Kop.
“It sounds funny but the German was serious, so much so that he asked the question to his Scotland left-back Andy Robertson, who knows McGinn well from the international set-up.
“The day after Aston Villa smashed Liverpool 7-2 last October [2020], the two players met up for Scotland duty. They discussed that astonishing game at Villa Park, as well as Klopp’s comments. It later emerged that some of Liverpool’s players were particularly impressed with McGinn, too.”
Therefore, we would not be shocked if Liverpool were to make a move for McGinn at some stage in the near future.
Due to the midfielder's contract situation, he will cost the club a bit of money. Transfermarkt value McGinn at €30 million.
In saying that, €30 million for a player of McGinn's ability and age is reasonable.
