Liverpool make CONTROVERSIAL Andy Robertson decision

The conversation surrounding Andy Robertson this season has shifted onto when, not if, Liverpool replace him.

The long-time left-back has struggled for form this season, and after being exposed by Bukayo Saka for Arsenal’s first goal in the 2-2 draw last month, head coach Arne Slot has seemingly lost a bit of faith in him.

Robertson played the full 90 in the League Cup fourth-round tie against Brighton, but has subsequently only seen 10 minutes of action over the two games since - a Premier League tie against Brighton (again) and a Champions League affair against Bayer Leverkusen.

Kostas Tsimikas has stepped into the role and done so admirably. He recorded the side’s second-highest rating on FotMob against Brighton with 8.2 (only Trent Alexander-Arnold received higher with 8.3).

Rumours are also circulating about Liverpool’s significant interest in Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, who sporting director Richard Hughes signed during his time at the club.

Football Insider are reporting, however, that Liverpool are looking at renewing Robertson’s contract.

Despite the Scottish captain’s contract being up at the end of next season, the report states that the Reds are planning to open contract talks with him this coming summer. This comes largely from wanting to avoid another tricky situation as seen with the ongoing Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold contract fiasco.

Slot has a decision to make

Head coach Arne Slot was asked about Tsimikas’s recent run of starts over Robertson in today’s press conference, saying: “I think we have two very good full-backs and we play many, many many games”.

“But definitely also has to do with the quality of the players and the difference, at least in my opinion, between the quality of these players,” Slot continued.

“So for me I have two very good left full-backs and [Robertson] has started a lot, Kostas has started a few times, so let's see who starts.”

The entire situation feels disconnected from every other aspect of it. Slot is clearly down on Robertson right now, understandably, but the club evidently aren’t keen to part ways with the icon yet.

Tsimikas also apparently wasn’t deemed the long-term replacement at the position, yet Slot trusts him for an extended run in the starting XI. And all of this before working Kerkez into the potential equation.

It is proving to be a transition period for Liverpool despite their immediate on-field success under a new head coach. Only time will tell how the squad will pan out.
