While Arne Slot might have started his time with Liverpool feeling optimistic about the forward personnel he had at his disposal, it is clear now six months down the line that recruitment is necessary.

Diogo Jota and Darwin Nuñez have struggled to make the No9 position their own this season through a mixture of injury problems and below-par performances keep them out of the team.

Likewise, Luis Diaz has dropped off significantly after his bright start to the season and with the Colombian's contract expiration looming in the distance, his future is very much in doubt.

Anfield Watch understands that Liverpool are considering a number of changes to their forward line for next season and when we recognise that Al-Hilal were willing to jump in at short notice to take Nunez off the Reds hands in January, it becomes clear that a striker is likely to come through the door in the summer.

One such option is Newcastle's Swedish talent Alexander Isak, who is battling with Erling Haaland to be be the Premier League's most prolific striker this season in a mini battle behind Mohamed Salah's dominance.

However, while his price tag is certainly going to be difficult for fans and the club's accounting department to get their heads around, his injury history might also be problematic.

Isak's recent injury history should be a concern

While still just 25-years-old, Isak has been involved in eight professional football seasons, across three clubs - Borussia Dortmund, Real Sociedad and Newcastle, while playing for his country Sweden.

He has missed 67 games with injury across that period since the 2016/17 season, and that equates to an average of 8.3 matches missed per season, while his current period of the sidelines is still being figured out.

Isak was absent for the Reds' clash against Newcastle at Anfield on Wednesday, which made for a relatively dull contest as the visitors were largely toothless in the Swede's absence.

The reason he missed the trip has been reported as a groin injury, although Magpies manager Eddie Howe is currently keeping his cards close to his chest regarding the severity of the issue.

Groin injuries have plagued the striker twice before, keeping him out for a total of 12 games last season - eight games between October and November 2023 and four games between January and February 2024.

As such, his current spell, if not managed properly, could be a sign of concern for the remainder of the season, which would greatly hinder Newcastle's European football qualification charge.

In addition to struggles with his groin, Isak's most prolific injury of his career has been with his thighs, which meant he spent 107 days (18 games) sidelined during the 2022/23 season for club and country.

Liverpool are understandably interested in him for his incredible threat in front of goal - across the last two Premier League seasons, he has 40 goals and 7 assists in 54 appearances, which clearly demonstrates a player on top of his game.

And even if Newcastle are to be willing to let him leave next season, it is clear that the Reds will have a serious fight on their hands if they are to wade off the world's admirers of the player.

But it might just be worth taking into consideration that one of the best qualities to have in football is availability, and Isak's injury history suggests that Liverpool should be wary before splashing the reported £150m Newcastle want for him.
