Liverpool agree midfield transfer, and write history for the first time in 100 years

Liverpool have agreed a transfer for an exciting midfielder and wrote history in the process.

The midfield is probably the biggest headache for Andoni Iraola right now.

It just doesn't feel like he has the right profiles to make his system work as effectively as he wants. At Bournemouth, Iraola had midfielders who could receive the ball and move it on quickly, helping his side transition from defence into attack.

Liverpool are different.

The problems aren't just with what happens when they have possession, either. The midfield looks far too porous, with gaps appearing far too easily and opponents finding space to attack.

That ultimately makes the whole team less effective.

Something has to change. Either Liverpool's current midfielders step up and start delivering the performances Iraola needs, or the Spaniard will have to make some difficult decisions.

The easy solution to Liverpool's midfield problems

Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch are both at their best when carrying the ball, while neither is particularly strong when it comes to winning possession back.

That makes playing the pair together in a double pivot a strange decision.

Alexis Mac Allister looks far better suited to the system and has also started the season in excellent form. Trey Nyoni's ability on the ball could also make him a really interesting option.

But if Liverpool want an intense ball-winner who can also play out from deep and help build attacks, they may need to look towards the transfer market.

Lamine Camara is reportedly high on the club's shortlist, and a move for the midfielder would make plenty of sense. He could be exactly what Liverpool's midfield is missing.

A new midfielder is coming as Liverpool write history

The Reds did sign a midfielder in the end.

Even though the transfer window shut two weeks ago, Liverpool quietly confirmed the arrival of Patrik Farkas as a free agent on the club's official website.

Farkas has returned to the club after leaving at U16 level to join Blackburn.

He joins his brother Erik, who is expected to sign a professional contract with the club and plays for the Reds' U18 side at the moment.

Together the duo have written history. They have become the first brother duo to represent Liverpool in over 100 years.

Previously, John and Tom Miller represented Liverpool in the 1910s, and early 1920s. Elisha and Billy Scott was another brother duo of the era who played for the Reds.

And now the Farkas brothers have joined the Millers and the Scotts and written themselves in the history books, too.
