Liverpool’s rumoured links in the transfer window this summer were comprehensive.

Fans became so frustrated with the news of Premier League opponents securing signatures for multiple players while Liverpool remained silent and inactive with supporters wondering who the new arrivals would be.

One area that clearly needed addressing was the defensive midfield role. Liverpool failed to sign Martin Zubimendi and then struggled to look elsewhere.

However, Liverpool started exploring the free agent market with one midfielder in mind. But this deal is now completely off the cards.

Liverpool get Adrien Rabiot transfer verdict

Liverpool then became interested in the signing of French midfielder Adrien Rabiot. The 29 year-old walked away from Juventus having played 35 times for the Italian outfit last season.

But, it has now been confirmed that Adrien has signed for Olympique de Marseille in France. The club confirmed on their website yesterday stating, “Olympique de Marseille announces that it has reached an agreement in principle with Adrien Rabiot for the arrival of the French international midfielder at the club. The player will sign with OM subject to the result of the medical examination.”

The signing of Rabiot could have been a smart move by Liverpool due to him being a free agent, but Adrien and his agents demand for wages was extortionate with the reported fee being in excess of €40 million over three seasons, which would have made him the Reds second highest paid player.

Rabiot could have done a good job filling in at midfield, especially in the defensive role having had prior experience in that position.

Reds supporters may feel like this is another opportunity missed. However, with Ryan Gravenberch currently covering the number 6 role and displaying some fantastic performances, Liverpool may feel like this will become his permanent position and the failed signing of Rabiot may be a blessing in disguise.
