Liverpool agree £60m deal for Southampton's Romeo Lavia

After an incredibly intense few days between Liverpool, Chelsea and both clubs' transfer targets, the Reds have now agreed a deal to sign Romeo Lavia from Southampton.

For months now, Liverpool have been trying to sign Southampton's Romeo Lavia, as the club aims to complete its midfield rebuild, stop leaking goals, and get back to fighting for trophies.

Until last week, the process of trying to sign the promising 19-year-old had been incredibly slow and lethargic, with the club submitting three bids (the highest of which being around £46m), and seeing all three subsequently rejected by the South Coast club.

However, on Monday morning, it seems Jurgen Klopp has finally seen a bid accepted by Southampton, with Jacob Steinberg of the Guardian reporting that a £60m deal had been agreed between the two clubs.

This comes after an incredibly drawn-out public poker match between Liverpool and Chelsea over the weekend, involving Lavia and his midfield counterparts Moises Caicedo - with both sagas yet to be completed and neither player signing any contract.

Liverpool's staggering British World Record bid of £111m for Caicedo came as a shock to fans, and even more so when Brighton accepted the offer and it looked certain that the Ecuadorian would wear red come the end of the transfer window.

Although, after already putting in the groundwork for months, Caicedo was reported to prefer a move to Chelsea and it is now widely expected that the midfielder will sign for the blues.

Liverpool have now expectedly turned their attention back to Lavia, albeit at a significantly higher price than the £50m that was originally rumoured to be enough to secure his services - an unfortunate by-product of the club showing the world that their pockets could go at least as deep as £111m this summer.

Although the deal is still not plain sailing from here, with Steinberg reporting that Liverpool now need to convince yet another midfielder to join them over Chelsea, with the indications being that the Belgian now also favours a move to the London club, despite them currently have no deal agreed with Southampton.

The crazy transfer saga, according to Sacha Tavolieri, is now set to develop very quickly as Liverpool look to complete their midfield rebuild.
