Liverpool 3-1 Burnley: Player Ratings

Liverpool are back to winning ways after overcoming a sluggish start to beat Burnley 3-1 in the Premier League in front of a record Anfield crowd.

The hosts fell completely flat for the first 30 minutes - but despite their poor display, they were the side that took the lead, with Diogo Jota pouncing on an error by James Trafford to head in to an open net in the 31st minute.

However, the Reds were unable to hold onto their lead until the break, with Dara O'Shea heading a fantastic header into the top-right corner on the stroke of half-time to equalise.

Jurgen Klopp's side regained their advantage seven minutes after the restart through Luis Diaz, who came flying in to head into the near corner from a deflected Harvey Elliott delivery.

Liverpool were lucky to stay in front after Chelsea loanee David Fofana broke in behind twice in the space of a few minutes, only to fluff both his chances.

But it was Darwin Nunez who gave the Reds breathing space with 11 minutes to play, brilliantly directing his header past Trafford with Elliott notching another assist.

From then on, Liverpool were able to see out the contest, taking them back to the top of the Premier League.

Here are the player ratings from the game.

CAOIMHIN KELLEHER (GK): 8

Called into action a handful of times in the opening stages as Burnley started on top, stood up well to the challenge. Couldn't do anything about O'Shea's header. Massive save to deny Fofana to maintain Liverpool's lead after the break.

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD (RB): 6

Had a shaky start up against Wilson Odobert as Burnley piled the pressure early on. Missed one of the few Liverpool chances in the first half, blazing over on the counter attack - but made up for things by providing the assist from a corner for Jota's opener. Surprisingly subbed at half-time - may be cause for concern.

JARELL QUANSAH (CB): 7

Largely assured at the back but booked for a needless lunging challenge in the first half, forcing him to walk on a tightrope for the remainder of the contest. Came inches from a first Anfield goal smashing one on the volley only for his effort to fly just past the post.

VIRGIL VAN DIJK (CB): 6

Unconvincing in the early stages, potentially shaking off the hangover from last week. Grew into the game and should probably have had a goal, directing a free header straight down the throat of Trafford from the penalty spot.

ANDY ROBERTSON (LB): 6

Decent work going forward and often stood strong at the back. Showed a little rust which is completely understandable.

WATARU ENDO (CM): 7

Looked to tidy things up in front of the defence but was sometimes too easily bypassed, losing his man for the equaliser. Greatly improved after the break and became at the centre of Liverpool's play.

ALEXIS MAC ALLISTER (CM): 6

In a position that should have allowed him more creativity, Mac Allister was largely anonymous in the first 45 and was rarely able to get involved. Was the centre of controversy for Liverpool's second, with his late challenge on Josh Brownhill causing many to believe the goal should have been ruled out. However, he would improve after Alexander-Arnold's substitution, with the absence of the Englishman on the right-flank forcing him into increased action.

CURTIS JONES (CM): 6

Hard at work in the engine room as he tried to extract some life from Liverpool after a flat 30 minutes. Couple of nice incisive passes after the break.

DIOGO JOTA (RW): 7

Tenacious work and quick feet earned a free-kick in a dangerous area as Liverpool looked to threaten Trafford's goal. Then provided the breakthrough goal, doing what he does best and finding himself in the right position to head into an open net. Denied a second by Trafford after the restart as he aimed to curl it into the far corner.

DARWIN NUNEZ (ST): 7

Always trying to make himself a presence but impact largely quelled in the first half, other than occasional flashed ball across the box. End product appeared after the break, however, directing his header brilliantly past Trafford to give Liverpool breathing space. Could have had a second in injury time but was denied.

LUIS DIAZ (LW): 8

Often showed his speed and his attributes as a live wire as Liverpool tried to grow into the game. Denied a certain goal by Trafford as he slid in to connect with Nunez's cross, but got on the scoresheet after the break as he flew in to head home at the near post. Great work to later set up Jota, good save from the Burnley stopper prevented him an assist.

SUBSTITUTES:

HARVEY ELLIOTT (ALEXANDER-ARNOLD, 46'): 8

It was his delivery that brought about Liverpool's second, immediately acting as a threat down the right-hand side upon his introduction to the game. Later saw a deflected effort flash wide, before bagging another assist for the Reds' third. Super sub.

CODY GAKPO (DIAZ, 82'): 6

Minutes for Gakpo as he helped Liverpool see out the win.

KOSTAS TSIMIKAS (ROBERTSON, 90+6'): N/A

Took a corner on his return from injury.

BOBBY CLARK (MAC ALLISTER, 90+6'): N/A

Minutes for the youngster.

JAMES MCCONNELL (ENDO, 90+6'): N/A

Ditto.
