Liverpool are reportedly in talks to complete Arne Slot's first signing at the club with more meetings scheduled to discuss a potential £25m transfer. 

For a few days, it seemed like Martin Zubimendi was going to be the first signing of the Arne Slot era. However, that move has fallen through with the player opting to stay at Real Sociedad.

That does not mean though that Richard Hughes' trip to Spain was in vain last week. The Liverpool sporting director didn't travel to Spain only to discuss a deal for Zubimendi but also to work on several other deals.

One of those deals included Liverpool's plans for the future in order to sign a goalkeeper who the club views as a potential successor to Alisson Becker's throne at Anfield.

The latest on Giorgi Mamardashvili to Liverpool

Hughes has been in talks with Valencia over a potential deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Georgian goalkeeper is valued at around €30m (£25m) and Valencia are open to selling him this summer.

Now according to Fabrizio Romano Liverpool have scheduled further talks to discuss Mamardashvili's future with the Reds still keen to bring in the goalkeeper this summer and make him the first signing of the Slot era.

Liverpool's plans are to loan the 23-year-old out before bringing him in to be Alisson's successor in a season or two. Mamardashvili seems content with that idea with the player himself open to the opportunity.

Bournemouth has been discussed as one possible destination for Mamardashvili, but Anfield Watch understands Leicester City is another possibility. Meanwhile, it hasn't been ruled out either that the Georgian could be loaned back to Valencia for another season as well.

Mamardashvili is highly rated among Europe's goalkeepers. He is regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in European football and showcased his quality at the European Championships this summer.
