Liverpool exits and incomings: EVERY off the pitch move in 2024
Liverpool are making a number of off-the-pitch moves in 2024. Here are all the ones you need to know.
Jurgen Klopp isn't the only exit from Liverpool in 2024. The Reds will see a number of people leave their roles this year, with even more arriving to fill them.
We've tried to round them all up here - but it's not an easy one. Several key names technically aren't joining Liverpool but FSG in order to oversee their football operations.
So we've done our best to explain it all.
Here are Liverpool's off-the-pitch ins and outs for 2024.
Leaving Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp - Manager
The most notable move of them all. Jurgen Klopp leaves Liverpool as one of their greatest-ever managers and the one who finally took them back to the top of the pile in England.
A true club legend, his eight-and-a-half-year spell unfortunately comes to an end.
Pep Lijnders - Assistant manager
Pep Lijndesr is an extremely highly-rated coach at Liverpool and there's even talk that the Reds are already hoping for a return down the line. For now, though, the Dutchman is off to embark on his own managerial career.
Peter Krawietz - Assistant manager
Peter Krawietz has worked with Klopp for a long time. He got his start in football with Mainz, where Klopp was a player and later manager. He followed him to Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, and will now follow him through the exit door at Anfield.
Vitor Matos - Assistant manager
Liverpool hired Vitor Matos in 2019 to fill the void left by Pep Lijnders, who had left to try management (he'd later return, of course). He quickly became a key part of the coaching staff, however, and developed a fantastic reputation at the club. He's now leaving along with the rest of the first-team coaches.
John Achterberg - Goalkeeping coach
John Achterberg has been at Liverpool for 15 years now, initially as a youth coach. Kenny Dalglish appointed him to a first-team role - one he's kept ever since. He's led goalkeeping at the club ever since, and it was he who pushed for Alisson Becker's signing in 2018. Liverpool announced at the start of May that he'll be leaving.
Andreas Kornmayer - Head of Fitness and Conditioning
One of Klopp's first key backroom signings, Kornmayer had worked against him with Bayern Munich before joining Liverpool. He moved to Anfield in 2016 as the head of fitness and conditioning - a role he's held ever since. David Lynch of This Is Anfield reports that he'll be another leaving the club this summer, though.
Left Liverpool
Jorg Schmadtke - Sporting director
Julian Ward's surprise departure in 2023 prompted Liverpool to find Jorg Schamdtke to fill the void as sporting director. It was only ever supposed to be a temporary role, however, and he left at the end of the 2024 January transfer window.
Joining Liverpool
Richard Hughes - Sporting director
The major confirmed hire by Liverpool this year is Richard Hughes, who arrives as sporting director from Bournemouth. He doesn't technically take the job until June, however, he's almost certainly had permission from the Cherries to work in some capacity.
David Woofine - Assistant Sporting Director
David Woodfine was previously Liverpool's head of loan management but he departed in 2023. Now he's back, albeit in a much bigger role as the assistant to Richard Hughes.
Mark Burchill - Scout
Mark Burchill currently works as the chief scout for Bournemouth, but he'll be joining Liverpool along with Hughes this summer.
Craig McKee - Scout
Craig McKee is a Bournemouth scout who will be joining Liverpool this summer.
Joining FSG
Michael Edwards - CEO of Football
Michael Edwards, Liverpool's former famed sporting director, returned to the fold this year by joining FSG as their head of football operations. It means he's not quite working with the Reds, and will instead oversee their multi-club project.
Julian Ward - Technical director
Julian Ward was Edwards' successor as sporting director at Liverpool. He left after just a year but is now back in fold - but with FSG as their technical director. He will be involved with the Reds but primarily overseeing player development. In other words, more of an academy role at Liverpool and a more overarching developmental role across FSG's planned expansion with other clubs.
Pedro Marques - Director of Football Development
Pedro Marques joins FSG as director of football development. It's a role that will see him based on Merseyside, but he's to play a key role in the multi-club project, above all. He arrives from Benfica, where he works as technical director and before that, Marques was at City Football Group.
