But it was far from routine. Actually it was the opposite of routine - PSG battered Liverpool for virtually the entire match, only for Alisson Becker to put in the performance of a lifetime.

Harvey Elliott stepped up to take advantage of that, slotting home the winner on 87 minutes after some brilliant work by Darwin Nunez. With that, Liverpool are on the front foot tonight.

However, PSG feel confident. They've been very open about believing they're the better team and their players reportedly came away from the match believing Bayern Munich and Arsenal were far tougher opponents this season.

Liverpool need to give them a reality check - and they've got just the way to do that.

Cody Gakpo is back

Arne Slot confirmed on Monday afternoon that Cody Gakpo has returned to the Liverpool squad to face PSG. The forward is fit to play and will feature.

Gakpo hasn't started a Liverpool game for a month now and completely missed both the meeting with PSG last week and the win over Southampton last weekend. He'd actually been a surprise inclusion in the travelling squad to Paris but ultimately wasn't fit enough.

But this is a celebration for Liverpool. Gakpo has been missed and has been the squad's most consistent non-Egyptian forward.

He'll make a real difference against a PSG team that needs to attack, with his hold up play almost certainly causing them more problems than Luis Diaz did on the flank. Nunez showed how much that physicality can make a difference - Gakpo can bring it, too.

In other words, we just think Gakpo is better suited to this fixture than most at Liverpool. PSG won't be happy to see him and while we're not sure he'll start, what an incredible weapon to have from the bench.
