"Let's face it" - Glen Johnson on Roberto Firmino's future

Former Liverpool full-back Glen Johnson has given his thoughts on Roberto Firmino's future role at the club.

The forward is behind the likes of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota in the pecking order at Anfield.

With that being the case, Johnson believes Firmino would not be entirely happy with his current position at the club.

As quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, he told GGRecon the following: "Let’s face it, if you’re a top player you want to play every single week so I don’t know how he feels about potentially playing a bit less next season.

"Jurgen Klopp obviously loves him and he’s a legend of the club, but is he going to be happy playing the last twenty minutes in certain games? Probably not.

"You don’t want to lose too many players who know the club inside out. I don’t know if Firmino will be one of the first names on the teamsheet next season but I definitely believe that he will play a big part."

Anfield Watch Verdict

We can see where Johnson is coming from. The reality is, Firmino has been a top player for Liverpool over the years.

The forward has scored 98 goals and registered 74 assists in 327 appearances for the club's first-team.

So, it must be difficult not being a regular starter in the first-team anymore. But, that's how football goes sometimes.

Firmino's contract expires next summer. We have no idea if the club are planning on offering the 30-year-old a new deal.

It would not be the worst idea to at least attempt to extend Firmino's stay at Liverpool. He certainly gives the Reds strength in depth.
