Kostas Tsimikas shares his initial reaction to Andy Robertson
Kostas Tsimikas has shared his first reaction to watching Andy Robertson at Liverpool. The pair are the Reds' best left-back options.
Kostas Tsimikas admits he just couldn't keep up with Andy Robertson when he first moved to Liverpool in 2020. The Greek left-back arrived from Olympiakos as competition to Robertson - but barely got a look-in.
Tsimikas played just two Premier League games in his first season, with one of those about three minutes in a 4-1 defeat against Manchester City. He didn't start a league game until his second season.
And he admits that's largely because it's so difficult to match what Robertson does for Liverpool. Tsimikas talked about it this week, saying that he only made it because Liverpool were willing to give him both time and faith.
“It was hard when I came here to play the football Robbo played,” he said, per the Mirror. “You need time to adapt.
“But the club believed in me, even when I didn’t play too much. Everybody needs time to find your best shape, but you must always enjoy it as much as you can at this club.”
Robertson has set the standards about as high as you possibly can at left-back. He's capable of everything - both going forward and defensively. And that's not to mention his ridiculous energy levels up and down that flank.
The fact that Liverpool looked at Tsimikas and believed he could deliver something similar is a sign of their faith in him. They stuck with that faith even after a near-disastrous first season, too, and now it's paying dividends.
With Robertson out injured, Tsimikas is playing regularly and contributing to a great spell for Liverpool. His two assists against Brentford are the finest example of that - he's become a productive player for the Reds.
Liverpool were absolutely right in their estimation, then, and Tsimikas deserves all the credit available for both taking on a seemingly unsurmountable challenge and coming out on top.
