Jurgen Klopp's new-look Liverpool set record his title-winners couldn't

Jurgen Klopp's new-look Liverpool have set a record this season that even his 2020 title-winners failed to match. The Reds are flying right now.

Liverpool went into this season with the biggest changes to their team since 2018. Jurgen Klopp overhauled his midfield in the summer, moving on from essentially every senior option aside from Thiago - and the Spaniard still hasn't even played this season.

In came the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo. It's just fundamentally a different outlook in midfield and one that, understandably, should be given time.

But it seems we're less giving it time to become workable, and more giving it time to become truly outstanding. Liverpool are showing no signs of growing pains as they've started the season in style.

They've only lost once, in fact - and even that would have been at least a draw if not for incompetent refereeing.

What really stands out, though, is the home record. Liverpool have won all eight of their opening fixtures at Anfield across all competitions. That's included a fantastic 3-0 win over high-flying Aston Villa, a 3-1 defeat of West Ham United and a 5-1 thrashing of Toulouse in the UEFA Europa League.

Those eight straight wins are the most Liverpool have managed to start a season since 1985/86. That campaign eventually saw the Reds finish as champions, two points ahead of Everton.

That's a fantastic omen, of course (though, we can't see Everton finishing second, honestly), but obviously quite some time ago now.

Perhaps a more relevant comparison is the title-winning side of 2019/20. That team started as well as any team really could do, dropping just two Premier League points up to February.

But even they couldn't match the home record that Liverpool have set this season. They drew home fixture no.7 5-5 in the Carabao Cup against Arsenal (they did then win on penalties, admittedly).

No, this current crop aren't on the level of that team just yet. But it goes to show just how impressive they are right now, given there is still so much room for growth both individually and tactically.

This season is certainly giving fans reason for optimism and here's yet another.
