"Klopp has promised him" - Pundit on Joe Gomez's Liverpool future
Former England international Paul Robinson has said that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp must have promised Joe Gomez more game time next season.
The centre-back signed a new contract with the Reds earlier this week. Therefore, Robinson believes that Klopp has promised the 25-year-old a future at Liverpool.
“I think he’s obviously got a great relationship with Jurgen Klopp," he told Football Insider.
“Klopp has promised him that there is some kind of future there, and I think it’s a fantastic signing for Liverpool.
“They’ve secured their asset for the next five years, and they now go into this season with four top-class centre-halves.
“It’s brilliant because if he plays then they have the player they wanted, but if he only plays a bit-part role – his value will only go up. They could have a £50-60 million centre-half on their hands.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
As much as I'd love Gomez to stay at Liverpool forever and be happy playing as a third or fourth-choice centre-back, I just don't think it's realistic.
I honestly believe that the 25-year-old has signed a new deal because the club or Klopp has promised him that he'll be sold next season if he is not getting regular minutes on the pitch this campaign.
If that is true, then I don't blame Gomez at all.
Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate will likely be Klopp's first-choice centre-backs in the years to come.
Joel Matip isn't getting any younger (30) but currently, he's still ahead of Gomez in the pecking order at Anfield and if he can stay fit, then the 25-year-old isn't getting close to the team.
So, I do have doubts about Gomez's future at Anfield.
