Jurgen Klopp says Luton draw showed Darwin Nunez is 'really different'

Jurgen Klopp says one quality makes Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez 'really different'. The Uruguayan is certainly unique.

Darwin Nunez got people talking again on Sunday as Liverpool drew 1-1 with Luton Town. Unfortunately, it wasn't for a sensational winner this time.

Instead, it was the opposite. The Uruguayan produced a remarkable miss in the second half, with his blushes only half-saved by the flag going up. It was an open goal, essentially, but Nunez smashed it over the bar from three yards.

Again, it didn't really matter but it was the latest demonstration of just how wide the striker's range is. He can produce absolute magic that few players can, while also being capable of Sunday-league errors.

The match at Kenilworth Road was an off-day, even without the miss. Nunez was very unlucky not to score in the first half, for instance, as he controlled a pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold and flicked it onto the bar.

That was one that could have flown in but the luck just wasn't there - and to be fair, it wasn't with anyone except Luis Diaz. but Jurgen Klopp feels Nunez still did show what separates him from everyone else, even on those off days.

“The first chance he had was really well done, great pass, first touch top, and then he nails it on to the crossbar,” Klopp told a press conference after the game. “The whole team was not in a goalscoring mood today obviously, and that’s then not helpful.

“But what makes Darwin really different is that he’s involved in pretty much everything. We are calm.”

And that is the true magic of Nunez. He's always involved, causing trouble for defences even on days where he's forgotten his shooting boots.

Liverpool do benefit from that. Maybe it's him pushing defenders back with his pace, or maybe it's just the attention he draws with his positioning. Either way, Nunez is more than just goalscoring - it's his threat.

And if he does manage to iron out the bad misses, there's little doubt that the 24-year-old would be one of the absolute best strikers in the world.
