Jurgen Klopp team selection against Bournemouth matches 59-year record

Jurgen Klopp certainly enjoyed Liverpool's commanding 4-0 victory against Bournemouth on Sunday, a game that had been marked as a potential banana skin for his side.

"It was obvious we needed to change something [in the second half]," said Klopp after the game. "We did and it worked much better.

"Everything was better, counter press is better, we put them really under pressure and we scored some beautiful goals, it was well played anyway. Impact from the bench again as well, so it turned into a pretty good evening."

Despite a raft of injuries, Klopp was still able to get the best out of the players at his disposal, making an in-form Bournemouth side look pretty ordinary.

One thing that will have impressed the Liverpool boss most is the performance of young Conor Bradley at right-back, the 20-year-old replacing the influential Trent Alexander-Arnold on his Premier League debut.

The Northern Irishman was magnificent, even registering an assist and a clean sheet on his first appearance in the competition.

However, he wasn't the only youngster handed an opportunity by Klopp, whose use of players on Sunday set a record unmatched by any Liverpool manager since the 1960s.

According to Opta's Michael Reid, Liverpool had six players aged 21 or younger play in the same league match for the first time since April 1965 against Wolverhampton Wanderers, and for only the fourth time ever.

The six players were Ryan Gravenberch (21), Owen Beck (21), Harvey Elliott (20), Conor Bradley (20), Kaide Gordon (19) and Bobby Clark (18).

While Klopp's decision to use so many youngsters was somewhat enforced by injuries to key first-team players, the German has been keen to give young stars a chance this season.

In fact, Klopp has used 12 different players that are 21 or under this term, those individuals registering a collective 95 appearances across all competitions.

While the majority of those outings come from Elliott (28), Gravenberch (25) and Jarell Quansah (15), it still shows Klopp's willingness to experiment with his team selection.

With Norwich City coming up in the FA Cup fourth round next weekend, a few youngsters will likely be handed some more minutes in Liverpool red.
