Jurgen Klopp reveals why he needs 'luxury' squad

Jurgen Klopp has insisted he will need a full squad in order to compete on all front this season.

Liverpool made it six wins in a row with a 3-1 victory over West Ham on Sunday, with the Reds sitting second in the Premier League table, still unbeaten in 2023/24.

In a much-changed lineup to the one that beat LASK on Thursday, Klopp's squad depth was on show as his side recorded a relatively comfortable victory at Anfield.

New signings Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, who produced a fine assist for Darwin Nuñez, impressed in midfield, while Dutch duo Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch came off the bench – the latter making his Anfield debut. Another substitute, Diogo Jota, scored the third late on.

The Reds still have Trent Alexander-Arnold and Thiago to return from injury, adding to the threats at Klopp's disposal.

Asked after the game about the 'luxury' of having options, Klopp told the BBC: "Luxury… it’s what we need.

"There are four competitions out there, and believe me, I spoke [with David Moyes] about that as well, David had that last year, constantly Thursday-Sunday is a tough one.

"If you play Champions League you might play Tuesday from time to time and then Saturday or Sunday, whatever.

"The difference here now is 100 percent clear, between Thursday and Sunday you don’t have a lot of time. We need to get used to that. For that we need a full squad, definitely.

"I spoke about that after the game. I loved the impact of the players when they come on, the positivity of all the players who came on. [To] really get the rhythm as quick as possible and make difference is just top class.

"It happened now a few times and we have to keep that until the end of the season."

Liverpool play again on Wednesday, as they take on Leicester City in the Carabao Cup third round. That match is then followed by a tricky away tie against Tottenham (Saturday, 30 September).

Prior to the next international break, the Reds also face games against Union Saint-Gilloise (Thursday, 5 October) and Brighton (Sunday, 8 October).
