Jurgen Klopp reveals he thought about handing out another debut against Luton
A youthful looking Liverpool put Luton Town to the sword to win 4-1 after a second-half comeback at Anfield on Wednesday night.
As a result of an injury crisis, Jurgen Klopp was forced to field his youngest starting XI in the Premier League since 2018 in the clash with the Hatters.
Things got off to a nervy start, with the Reds falling behind to a goal from Chiedozie Ogbene after just 11 minutes. However, a stunning second-half display turned things around.
Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz all scored, while 20-year-old Harvey Elliott capped a star turn with the fourth late on.
Youngster Conor Bradley, also 20, also impressed once again, while Klopp brought on teenage trio Bobby Clark (19), James McConnell (19) and Jayden Danns (18) from the bench.
The latter helped set up Elliott's strike with a neat through ball and was involved in a heartwarming moment after the final whistle when Luton Town manager Rob Edwards interrupted an embrace between Danns and Klopp to reveal he'd played against the young forward's dad.
Two other teenagers Kaide Gordon and Trey Nyoni were also in the matchday squad, though remained unused on the bench.
Speaking after the game, Klopp hailed his young stars for stepping up amid the injury troubles and admitted that Nyoni could've got a debut on another day.
“Some of the kids started, the others came on, and they did an incredible job,” he told Sky Sports.
“It’s cool how a culture educates the next generation, to be honest.
“Yes Curtis is injured in the moment, but I said a few weeks ago: if Curtis Jones can learn defending, everybody can learn defending.
“If you see Bobby Clark and James McConnell, oh my god. And Trey, sitting outside, and you think ‘maybe we bring him [on]?’, just because the boys are that good.
“But in general, how the stadium and the team together changed that game was just exceptional.”
16-year-old Nyoni was the youngest member of the Reds' squad on Wednesday night.
The young midfielder only joined Liverpool last summer from Leicester City's academy, but has already excelled for the Reds' youth sides and has made the first-team squad on several occasions so far this season.
