Jurgen Klopp provides 'best' update on Cody Gakpo, Thiago suffers new setback

Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Cody Gakpo is 'walking normally' again after the injury he suffered in the defeat to Tottenham. 

The 24-year-old forward scored Liverpool's first-half equaliser but was substituted soon after with an apparent knee issue, while he left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a leg brace, leading to fears over a serious injury.

However, scans revealed the problem to be relatively minor and that he would likely only miss a couple of weeks of action, rather than months.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday, ahead of the weekend clash at Brighton, Klopp appeared to confirm the reported timeline for Gakpo's recovery.

Klopp told reporters: "Cody has a good chance that he will be back [after the break]. Already out of the brace, walks normal around here.

"So from all the very, very bad opportunities and possibilities injury-wise, we nearly got the best, but he is still injured."

Sunday's trip to Brighton is the Reds' final game before the October international break, with their next fixture coming on Sunday 21st with the visit of Everton.

Giving updates on the other injured members of the first-team squad, Klopp also admitted that Thiago has suffered a fresh setback in his recovery.

He said: "For him (Thiago) especially, it’s annoying. Now two setbacks in the rehab.

"Not massive but enough to take him off the pitch again. Obviously not the same injury, not at all, but a bit similar."

The 32-year-old has yet to feature at all in 2023/24 and last started a game for Liverpool in February.

Meanwhile, Klopp refused to set a return date for young Stefan Bajcetic, who also hit a snag in his recovery from long-term injury.

Klopp added: And as annoying as it is for Stefan Bajcetic. Was there, played a few minutes, and then felt something else. That’s how it is after long-term injuries from time-to-time.

"I don’t know, I will not put pressure on [when they can return]. If they will be back after international break, we will see. Hopefully, would be cool."
