Jurgen Klopp on Sir Alex Ferguson's level after 'incredible' rebuild

Former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp has hailed Jurgen Klopp's recent rebuild of Liverpool, comparing the German to Manchester United managerial great Sir Alex Ferguson.

Liverpool's team was in dire need of an overhaul at the tail end of last season, with the serial winners of old failing to convince fans that they could keep up at the top level.

What followed was a summer revamp of the team's core, with former Reds pillars Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Fabinho all condemned to the scrap heap in place of a new, exciting midfield quartet.

This consisted Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch - four arrivals who have all impressed in their own right since landing on Merseyside.

Having greatly influenced Liverpool's fantastic start to the season, Klopp's side sit top of the tree after 16 games, and look well in the race for the Premier League title.

The Reds look like a completely different beast to the one we saw 12 months ago, and Redknapp has praised the boss for his efforts in getting the club back on track.

"This has been an incredible rebuild, to be in this position right now and how he's turned it around, Jurgen Klopp," Redknapp told Sky Sports.

"From looking like a team I didn't quite know where they were going, I was thinking two or three years before Liverpool can challenge again. To get them in this position just shows you how good Jurgen Klopp is.

"Alex Ferguson was the best at it. He would always reinvent teams, bring in new players. Jurgen Klopp is showing that quality very quickly this year and I'm so excited by this team."

This comes ahead of Sunday afternoon's mammoth clash between Liverpool and United, of which the Reds will be incredibly confident of a result, given their opponent's shoddy start to the campaign.

Not many comparisons to Manchester United can be classed as a compliment at the moment - but for Klopp, this one is undoubtedly an exception.
