Jurgen Klopp name-checks Gareth Southgate following Man City draw

Jurgen Klopp name-checked England manager Gareth Southgate after Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday. 

The Reds slipped to second in the table after failing to find victory against the current champions at Anfield, but Klopp's side put in a terrific performance on Merseyside.

Liverpool were guilty of missing some big chances and should have been awarded a late stoppage-time penalty in the draw, even with some of the club's key players sidelined.

It was an impressive display from everyone in red on Sunday, but Klopp was quick to highlight the performance of the versatile Joe Gomez after the match, even calling on England boss Southgate to consider him for the national team during the March international break.

The defender featured at left-back and right-back over the course of the game, with the Liverpool boss simply stating after the match: "Joe Gomez. Gareth, honestly."

Gomez should be under consideration for a call-up to the Three Lions squad this month, but Southgate has shown little faith in Liverpool's No.2 in the past.

The 26-year-old has just 11 caps for his country and hasn't donned an England shirt since a friendly against Wales in August 2020.

Prior to the clash with Man City, Klopp had pointed out just how important Gomez could be to Southgate ahead of Euro 2024, hinting that the Three Lions boss should utilise the flexible defender.

"I am not standing here telling Gareth who he should pick but you can get one player and have four positions covered," Klopp said.

"Wonderful. If you play football at this level, there is [a big] difference between centre-half, full-back, right, left, to the No.6 – and he is capable of that transition in his mind.

"He is one of those stories. What a wonderful player he is and I am so happy he can show that again. In midfield, the game is coming from all angles. Everything changes and he has dealt with it so well, it's crazy. Really good and super-important."

Gomez has dazzled across the back four this season and even enjoyed a couple of games in defensive midfield recently, with the former Charlton Athletic man more suited to playing in a full-back role.

With England suffering plenty of injuries to key defensive personnel, it would seem bizarre for Gomez not to be recalled to the national team squad during the upcoming March international break.
