Jurgen Klopp left fuming at VAR again despite Burnley win

Liverpool's 2-0 victory against Burnley on Boxing Day may have been routine in the end, but that didn't stop there being even further VAR controversy.

The Reds had two goals ruled out on Tuesday, but the second one in particular left manager Jurgen Klopp fuming at the VAR.

"Only somebody who never played football could have made that call," he told Amazon Prime, indicating the apparent absurdity of the decision.

The incident in question came ten minutes into the second half and saw Harvey Elliott denied what seemed a legitimate goal that would have firmed up the Reds' grip on the game.

The goal, which went in off the near post after a low cross from the right by Ryan Gravenberch, was ruled out after VAR deemed Mohamed Salah offside and obstructing Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford's line of sight.

"They will tell us in the end that it's offside, whatever, he looked at it for five minutes and it's insane when you see that," Klopp added.

"But we all watch football and we all need referees, but we need them with the right interpretations of the rules. How can you make of this situation not a goal? Wow. If it was not us I would say it's a clear goal."

Salah's position was 'involuntary'

Former Liverpool player Steve McManaman echoed Klopp's sentiments calling the decision "madness", emphasising that Salah's positioning was involuntary and had no impact on the goalkeeper's ability to stop Elliott's shot.

In fact, replays showed Salah's positioning stemmed from being pushed by Burnley defender Jordan Meyer, a crucial factor ignored in VAR's decision-making.

Despite the controversy, Liverpool secured their win with goals from Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota, temporarily claiming the top spot in the Premier League.

"It's nice," Klopp added as he was shown the league table. "It will probably change, I don't know when, but that's no problem. 42 points, it was not perfect, but we are alright and we are where we are."
