Jurgen Klopp FA Cup record compared to Pep Guardiola & Mikel Arteta

Liverpool will play their first FA Cup game of the 2023/24 season on Sunday, but it promises to be a difficult affair for the Reds.

A trip to face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium lies in wait for Jurgen Klopp and his players, Liverpool looking to bring their three-game winless run against the Gunners to an end.

Klopp has helped revolutionise Liverpool since arriving in 2015, but the FA Cup hasn't always been his number one priority.

In fact, Liverpool have only made it to the quarter-final once during the German's reign, going on to win the competition on that occasion in 2022.

But how does Klopp's FA Cup record compare to the Premier League's other top coaches Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta?

PEP GUARDIOLA'S FA CUP RECORD

The Manchester City boss has taken charge of significantly more FA Cup matches than Klopp despite having arrived in England more recently than the German.

Guardiola has managed 36 FA Cup ties, winning a remarkable 30 of those clashes since his debut in the competition back in 2017 - losing five and drawing one of his other games.

Despite such an impressive record, Guardiola only has two FA Cup trophies to his name, such is the ruthlessness of knockout football.

The Spaniard won the trophy in 2019, managing his second triumph last season with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United in the final.

However, in his only meeting with Klopp in the FA Cup, Guardiola didn't prevail.

When Liverpool won the trophy in 2022, eventually beating Chelsea in the final, the Reds came out 3-2 victors against Man City in the semi-final at Wembley Stadium.

MIKEL ARTETA'S FA CUP RECORD

Arsenal boss Arteta is relatively inexperienced in the FA Cup in comparison to Guardiola and Klopp, but has still managed to lift the trophy during his time in north London.

Excluding his time as assistant manager to Guardiola at Man City, Arteta has won the FA Cup once, that triumph coming during his debut campaign with the Gunners in 2020.

Arsenal beat Guardiola's Cityzens in the semi-final before a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brace won them the trophy at Wembley against Chelsea.

However, Man City did beat Arsenal en route to the final last season, winning 1-0 in the fourth round against the Gunners.

Out of just 11 FA Cup matches, Arteta has won eight and lost three. This Sunday will be the first time that he and Klopp meet in the competition.

JURGEN KLOPP'S FA CUP RECORD

As previously mentioned, Klopp's record in the FA Cup leaves a lot to be desired.

The 56-year-old has overseen 24 games in the competition, only winning half of his FA Cup battles. Of the rest, Klopp has drawn five and lost seven.

Liverpool's defeats in the competition have all been fairly underwhelming, including losses to Wolverhampton Wanderers (2017), back when they were a Championship side, and West Bromwich Albion (2018) at Anfield.

In truth, Klopp has rarely played full-strength sides in the early rounds of the competition, but that doesn't excuse such a poor record given Liverpool's resources.

There have also been draws with Exeter City (2016), Plymouth Argyle (2017) and Shrewsbury Town (2020) for the Liverpool boss.

With Arsenal in the third round this season, Klopp's record may not get an awful lot better, but the former Borussia Dortmund manager will want his side to be more competitive than in previous years.

However, it's worth remembering that Klopp still has an FA Cup trophy in his cabinet, more than a number of Liverpool managers of yesteryear.
