Rafael Benitez has wished both Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp the best for the future, following the manager's shock exit announcement.

Klopp revealed last Friday that he would be leaving Anfield at the end of the season, bringing a near nine-year tenure to an end.

Throughout that time, the 56-year-old has transformed the club, winning every major honour available including, of course, the 2019 Champions League and 2019/20 Premier League.

Benitez, now coaching back in Spain with Celta Vigo, was the last man to lead the Reds to the European crown prior to Klopp, back in 2005.

He spoke to the Spanish press about Liverpool’s current situation, revealing that he had some insider’s knowledge about how the process would play out.

“I have an advantage, which is that I have people in Liverpool and also people at the club, so more or less, I know how it has happened,” Benitez said.

"I only have positive words about Klopp, because he is my friend and I have a good relationship with him.

"He has done - and is doing - an enormous job. Everything I can say about Klopp and Liverpool is positive.

“I know better than most people how it is from the inside, and that has even more value.

“He goes and speaks up, giving the club time to reorganise, which, from another perspective, is also very German, because they do notify in advance, so it is not a shock.

“Let’s hope Liverpool will do well for now and when another coach comes too. I hope the best for the club.”

Following Klopp announcement that he does not have the energy to continue as Liverpool boss, speculation has quickly turned to who could replace him.

One of Liverpool’s all-time greats, and a former Benitez player, Xabi Alonso is the early frontrunner, with the ex-midfielder impressing in Germany at table-topping Bayer Leverkusen.

Meanwhile, the likes of Roberto De Zerbi (Brighton) and Ruben Amorim (Sporting CP) have also been linked with the Anfield hot seat.
