Jurgen Klopp confirms some team news ahead of the League Cup final
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Reds goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher will start against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium in the League Cup final on Sunday.
Alisson is the club's first-choice goalkeeper. However, Kelleher has been Liverpool's No.1 shot-stopper in the 2021-22 League Cup campaign.
The Irishman has made three appearances in the competition this season. Alisson on the other hand has only featured in one match.
Kelleher has performed well in the League Cup this season. The 23-year-old has averaged a WhoScored player rating of 7.52 in the three games that he has played in.
With that being the case, Klopp has made it clear that Kelleher will start against Chelsea.
“Caoimh is an exceptional goalkeeper and we want to keep him here and for that, he needs games,” said Klopp, as quoted by the Irvine Times.
“These games are his competition, and there’s no chance of him not playing.
“It’s just a thing we have to do because of the quality Caoimh has. We want to keep him as long as somehow possible, knowing that, from our point of view, the best goalkeeper in the world (Alisson) is our number one.
“As always, if it works out, then it’s all about Caoimh. If it doesn’t work out, then it’s all about me. It’s as easy as that, and I take it.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
We love that Klopp is going to reward Kelleher with a starting place in the League Cup final.
Yes, Alisson is a top-class goalkeeper. There is a reason why Liverpool paid Roma €62.50 million for the Brazilian's services back in the summer of 2018.
But, the reality is that Kelleher does deserve to start against Chelsea. The Irishman has stated that he is nervous ahead of the match. But, he believes a few nerves are a good thing.
As quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, Kelleher told The Telegraph the following: "I will just be relaxed and calm and try to prepare like any other game. There will be some nerves. But a little bit of nerves are good.”We wish Kelleher all the best for Sunday.
