Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Liverpool didn't sign a defender this season because of Jarell Quansah. The boss was thinking about it.

Liverpool had a huge transfer window in the summer, completely revamping their midfield and seeing several key players depart. It was one of the most important in their recent history - and has transformed things on the pitch.

But it may have been even bigger. Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Liverpool were thinking about signing a centre-back in the summer to bolster their options.

The reason they didn't complete a deal? Jarell Quansah. Klopp was so impressed with the then-19-year-old that he knew the squad didn't need to sign anyone new.

"So we got asked a lot that we have to sign a new centre-half," Klopp told a press conference on Thursday. "And obviously we were thinking about that as well, it’s not that we ignore potential issues or whatever.

“But when we saw him, it was clear that we will not go for it. That we will have our own solution. And without knowing how much game time he will get already this year. Because of the situation and because of his development, he is obviously now a proper, proper part of the squad, a proper part of the rotation.

“It’s not about performing, they all are good, it’s about how can you share intensity and he plays an important role… It’s an interesting package. I’m really excited about it.”

And what a decision it's proven to be. Quansah has been a revelation this season, impressing across all competitions and firmly looking like a secure member of the squad.

If he continues on this path, Liverpool will have a fantastic homegrown centre-back. The big decision is now whether the Reds feel Quansah can be a successor to Joel Matip in the squad, with the Cameroonian's contract expiring in the summer.
