Jurgen Klopp confirms Dominik Szoboszlai hamstring injury in 'intense' Newcastle win

Liverpool's thrilling 4-2 win against Newcastle United has been clouded by a fresh injury setback, with midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai forced off the field due to a hamstring issue.

The Hungary captain, who was replaced by Ryan Gravenberch in the 64th minute of the Anfield clash, was seen clutching his leg, sparking concerns about the severity of the injury.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the match, Klopp praised his team's energetic display but highlighted concerns about the toll it took on the players' fitness: "Dominik Szoboszlai with a hamstring, we hope not too serious. Other players felt it as well. It's super intense. But there's no alternative if you want to win football games."

Klopp added: “We wanted to take him off, that was the plan, but unfortunately it was somehow a minute late because in the last situation he felt the hamstring. Now we don’t know the extent of it, obviously, so we have to wait."

"A sensational game"

The victory propelled Liverpool three points clear at the top of the Premier League table, but the potential absence of Szoboszlai will add to the Klopp's concerns, especially with Wataru Endo playing his last game before leaving for Asian Cup duty.

Speaking about the game, Klopp added: "It was a sensational game from my team. We started extremely lively. Everyone saw [how Newcastle keeper Martin] Dubravka or we ourselves made sure the score didn't get too clear. Super game. I loved so many aspects of the game bar the goals we conceded."

He went on to praise the counter-pressing on display from both sides, praising it as an example for "football schools".

"They have to watch that, take it and keep it. It was everything good."

Time to refresh

Klopp and the Reds' medical team will now assess the extent of Szoboszlai's injury in the coming days which will provide an opportunity for recovery.

"The show must go on. We now have five or six days so three training days. It will change the world from a freshness point of view," Klopp said.

There was good news today, however, with the return of Alexis Mac Allister to the field, putting in a good performance during his 15-minute cameo.

Thiago, too, is nearing a return to action and could be back in team training soon.
