When Harvey Elliott's late strike hit the back of the net against Crystal Palace on Saturday, not only did it secure a vital 2-1 win for the Reds, it also helped his manager leapfrog Sir Alex Ferguson in one very surprising statistic.

This was the 17th time that Liverpool under the management of Jurgen Klopp have won a Premier League game in the 90th minute or later since the German was appointed in October 2015. This is one more than the 16 achieved by the legendary Manchester United boss.

As you would expect, in came in dramatic circumstances. After Jean-Philippe Mateta gave Palace the lead early in the second half from the penalty spot, the game turned when Jordan Ayew was sent off for his second bookable offence.

Mohamed Salah then set up a tense finish with his 200th Liverpool goal, before Elliott's strike in the 91st minute sealed victory.

High-pressure moments

The term 'Fergie time' was coined as a result of the Scot's team's uncanny ability to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat late on. However, despite his illustrious 21-season tenure at Old Trafford, Ferguson's teams managed to secure wins in the 90th minute or later on just 16 occasions, now trailing slightly behind Klopp's Liverpool.

That Klopp has clinched one more late win than Ferguson's United over just an eight-year span showcases the incredible ability of the German's side to consistently perform in high-pressure, closing moments of matches.

Such performances have earned the Reds the self-given moniker of 'Mentality Monsters'.

Still some way to go

Nevertheless, while Klopp's accomplishment is noteworthy, he still falls short of the top spot on the late-game heroics leaderboard. In fact, Klopp sits third in the table.

David Moyes, the current manager of West Ham, boasts an impressive record with 20 wins decided in or after the 90th minute.

Further ahead is Arsene Wenger, who, during his remarkable 22-year tenure at Arsenal, secured an impressive 21 victories in similar scenarios.
