Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola react after Darwin Nunez clash

Tempers flared at full-time as Darwin Nunez and Pep Guardiola got into a heated exchange on the touchline.

It went against the grain of what was a largely conservative afternoon at the Etihad, which saw Trent Alexander-Arnold salvage a point for Liverpool after Erling Haaland opened the scoring for City in the first half.

Tensions nevertheless bubbled over on the final whistle, with the Liverpool striker and City manager appearing to exchange Spanish unpleasantries as Jurgen Klopp tried to drag his hot-headed number nine away.

The Reds boss has given his take on the confrontation, insisting that it was nothing more than an isolated altercation.

"It has nothing to do with the fierce rivalry," he said. "I don't think Darwin Nunez knows anything about it.

"I don't think I'm the one to explain it because I'm not involved, surprisingly.

"I love them both. I tried to calm it down without understanding a word."

Meanwhile, Guardiola has chosen not to throw dirt towards the Uruguayan, instead laughing off the incident.

He said: "Nothing happened.

"He's just stronger than me! It's not frustration, I'm really pleased.

"The second question, you ask that? Maybe the last question.

"I am incredibly pleased. We know how tough they are."
