Julian Nagelsmann unsure about Germany future amid Liverpool links

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann remained coy when asked about his future ahead of the 2024 Europeans Championships.

After his departure from Bayern Munich, Nagelsmann took charge of the German national team following the dismissal of Hansi Flick in September.

He was given the unenviable task of getting his side into shape ahead of a home Euros this summer, after witnessing string of embarrassing results during Flick's tenure - the final straw of which was a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of a Wataru Endo-led Japan.

With his job objectives being something of short-term, that was reflected in his contract, which is set to expire after the conclusion of the Euros.

As such, Nagelsmann has been linked with taking the place of fellow countryman Jurgen Klopp in the Liverpool dugout, who shocked the world two weeks ago when announcing his Anfield departure after nine seasons at the club.

However, when questioned about where his future lied, he insisted that he's only focussed on getting Germany through the Euros.

Asked by Sky Sports if he'd still be Germany head coach at the start of the Nations League in September, Nagelsmann replied: "I haven't thought about it yet.

"Since my contract ends after the Euros, I would say, 'as it stands now, no.' I've said it since the beginning of my tenure.

"The Euros is currently the focus. Then we'll see if I'm still the coach. If so, we'll prepare very well and try to get the most out of it and win the group. We want to play a good Euros. Then we'll see what happens next."

Nagelsmann has long-been the next big thing in European management, having burst onto the scene when appointed at Hoffenheim manager at just 28 - the youngest coach in Bundesliga history.

Taking Hoffenheim from relegation-threatened to a Champions League place, he would go on to have a fruitful spell at RB Leipzig before taking on the Bayern job in 2021.

Despite winning the Bundesliga in his first season - a feat that comes expected in Munich - his stint at the Allianz Arena didn't go exactly to plan, and he was canned in 2023 after a drop-off in results.

Nevertheless, at just 36, he remains one of the youngest and most desirable managers in world football - and his name is thus unsurprisingly seen alongside the likes of Xabi Alonso and Roberto De Zerbi on the list of potential candidates to succeed Klopp at Liverpool.
