James Pearce has provided an update on the current situation surrounding Mohamed Salah's contract talks with Liverpool.

Last week, Fabrizio Romano reported that Liverpool and Salah have made no progress since December on his contract extension talks.

The transfer journalist also claimed that the Egyptian and his agent have 'no intention' to sign the current offer on the table from FSG.

Now, The Athletic's Liverpool correspondent James Pearce has provided a more detailed update on what is currently happening between both parties.

In his article, Pearce opened it up by saying; 'Salah stand-off over new deal is about money, respect and recognition.'

Pearce also clarified that the Egyptian has not had his head turned by another Premier League club, despite rumours of that on Friday, as cited by Anfield Watch.

"The ongoing stand-off over a new deal isn’t about him feeling tempted to embark on a fresh challenge or experience life elsewhere. The 29-year-old hasn’t had his head turned by a rival. This is about money, respect and recognition," said Pearce.

"The Egyptian has repeatedly stated that he wants to stay at Anfield beyond the summer of 2023 and that remains the case. As good as he’s been for Liverpool, he acknowledges that they have also provided the perfect team structure and environment for him."

The Athletic journalist also spoke about FSG's stance on the Salah contract situation, as cited by Anfield Watch.

"Fenway Sports Group are still determined to retain Salah’s services, but not at any price. They are prepared to make Salah the highest-paid player in the club’s history," said Pearce.

"The contract saga has dragged on throughout this season because there’s a significant difference between what Liverpool are willing to pay him and what Salah believes he’s worth. All parties have so far remained tight-lipped about the figures involved.

"They won’t completely demolish a wage structure that has served Liverpool so well."

Anfield Watch Verdict

What a mess of a situation this is turning out to be. It's something that Jurgen Klopp will not be happy about during this important period of the season.

Luckily, it didn't seem to throw off the team spirit during the Brighton and Hove Albion game on Saturday.

Despite Salah trying to force the club to pay an extraordinary amount of money for his services, the Egyptian is still giving his all for the club on the field, something that the fans appreciate.

Hopefully, this contract situation is dealt with as soon as possible so the fans know where to stand on the situation.
