Jose Mourinho shares his take on Ruben Amorim after Liverpool REJECTED him
Jose Mourinho has given his thoughts on compatriot Ruben Amorim after Liverpool rejected the chance to hire the Sporting CP boss.
Jose Mourinho was asked for his thoughts on Ruben Amorim after a difficult week for the Sporting CP boss. Amorim was forced to apologise publicly to his club after an ill-advised trip to London to talk with West Ham United.
That trip, however, was supposedly a plan devised to put pressure on Liverpool. The Reds were strongly linked with a move for Amorim and the Portuguese manager was the bookies’ favourite to take over from Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool were reportedly put off, however, and instead moved forward with Arne Slot. Amorim, instead, has been linked with West Ham and Chelsea, while there are plenty of suggestions that he’ll instead remain with Sporting.
So this was the background of the question put to Mourinho. The legendary boss admits he shouldn’t really talk about it but did tip Amorim for major success.
“It’s also a question I shouldn’t answer, but what can I tell you? I like him as a person, I like him as a coach,” he said, per Mais Futbol.
“I think he’s capable of coaching in any league and he’s capable of coaching at any club. But he’s in a good league and he’s at a great club.
“It’s his decision and it will be, or not, up to the clubs that want him or don’t want him or want to convince him, with more or less arguments. What’s clear from me is that I like the person and I like the coach.”
Mourinho tips Amorim for success
Whether Liverpool like it or not, the entire saga will keep Amorim’s name linked to them for the foreseeable future. Should Slot fail, for instance, questions will be asked whether they should have jumped on Amorim.
Let alone if Mourinho’s right and his compatriot goes on to have success at a higher level.
For now, though, Liverpool have made their choice and they believe Slot is the manager for them. Fingers crossed they’re right, and that the Dutchman has an even higher ceiling.
