Jordan Henderson makes dramatic U-turn on Liverpool decision
Jordan Henderson has made a dramatic U-turn on his decision to leave Liverpool in the summer to join the Saudi Pro League. The Reds' former captain wants to make a return to England.
This comes from the Daily Mail. They report that Jordan Henderson no longer wants to play in Saudi Arabia, despite his reported £700k-a-week contract.
Henderson made a highly controversial move from Liverpool to Al-Ettifaq in the summer, becoming one of the world's highest-paid footballers. It was a move that came out of nowhere, essentially, and truly shocked people.
Here was arguably the most respected captain in English football, a champion of social rights, taking the money and jumping into a sports-washing project. To say it was poorly received would be a massive understatement.
Henderson was also the sole English star joining the Middle East exodus. It brought a lot of attention, virtually all of it negative.
The Liverpool captain tanked his reputation in the game for an enormous contract. Now, just months later, he has reportedly concluded that the enormous contract wasn't worth it.
Henderson wishes to return to the Premier League. He hasn't settled in Saudi Arabia, while Al-Ettifaq are falling apart. Results have been awful (no wins in two months), putting manager Steven Gerrard under massive pressure.
And to make matters worse, Gerrard's assistant, Ian Foster, has quit to take over at Plymouth Argyle. The writing seems to be on the wall for Gerrard, certainly, and that would only exacerbate Henderson's desire to move.
So would Premier League teams take him? It was be an interesting one, given the criticism in the summer, but he's a player who won absolutely everything as Liverpool captain. That's going to appeal to plenty of teams.
This is one to watch this month, then. Henderson's decision to leave now looks like one of the worst player decisions in recent memory.
