Joe Gomez has opened up about the decision he made to stay at Liverpool instead of leaving to find more game time.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, as quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, the centre-back said that he wanted to rise to the challenge he is facing at Anfield.

He said: “I can understand why people would have thought I’d be considering moving on, for sure, 100%. It’s apparent from my age now and based on my opportunities in the past, there was definitely still a decision for me to make.

“I guess you could see it at as a crossroads. But speaking to the club, I knew it was an important decision for me to make. Fundamentally, the opportunity that I have here and the platform and the chance to be at this club is one that is hard to walk away from.

“Essentially, it was me accepting the fact I have got to take on the challenge. Once I got my head around what I wanted to do, me signing is me understanding the challenge and wanting to rise to it.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

This is such an amazing mentality by Gomez. He could've easily asked Liverpool to sell him this summer, instead, he's rising to the challenge and trying to force his way into Jurgen Klopp's team.

Gomez knows best how hard it will be with Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip ahead of him in the pecking order, but with the right attitude, he can force his way into the German's plans.

On his day, the England international is a top defender. Gomez was so pivotal in our title-winning season (28 appearances), so Klopp knows the levels that he can produce.

With his future now sorted until 2027, hopefully we can see the best of Gomez in the coming season.
