Fine margins decided Sunday's Carabao Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea, but Reds defender Joe Gomez believes one key factor swung the outcome in favour of the Merseysiders.

Speaking after Liverpool's 1-0 extra-time victory over the West Londoners, Gomez, who came on as a first-half substitute for the injured Ryan Gravenberch, attributed part of their success to the unwavering backing his side received from their supporters.

"I'm not one for clichés, but I think we have the best fans in the world," Gomez said during his post-match interview.

"It's a 50-50 stadium, but it's evident how superior our fans are in comparison. I hope they realise that and how much it means to us."

The stand-in full-back stressed that with tired legs, deep into extra time, both teams were in need of a "boost". While it wasn't forthcoming from "the opposite side", the Liverpool fans delivered at the crucial moment: "It helps us so much. That is one thing we are all grateful for."

Savour the moment

Gomez's comments underscore the pivotal role he believes Liverpool's fans play in energising the team, especially during tough times.

The 26-year-old expressed gratitude towards the supporters and stressed the importance of savouring such moments, acknowledging that the fans are a significant driving force behind the team's achievements.

"The gaffer has the mindfulness to say, 'Let's enjoy this moment,' and rightly so," Gomez added.

"The fans are the reason why we do it. We have to enjoy it. We are still in the middle of the season, and it's not done, but if we don't savour these moments, what do we do it for?"

A springboard

Liverpool's Carabao Cup victory could mark the beginning of a potentially trophy-laden season, with the team currently leading the Premier League and favourites to win the Europa League. On Wednesday night, they also have an FA Cup tie against Southampton at Anfield.

"We don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but we are in every competition, and we are going to try to win every game," said Gomez. "That's the target, and we will go again. We have a game again in three days, so we'll have to band the boys together and see what we can do."
